In Bastardville, the normal way of things is men and women die when they are 31. Men wait until they are 31 to impregnate a women, and once that's taken care of they usually die not long after, never seeing their child. Women wait until they are 30 to be impregnated and die soon after child birth when they are 31. This is seen to be natural and the best one can hope for. But not everyone dies at this age. Some, the cursed, die many years later when they are in their 50s, 60, 70s, or even 80s or 90s (and, goodness forbid, sometimes even into the 100s). Those who are young shake their heads and say things like "how sad, he just turned 87 and is in great health," or "it's so senseless and tragic when someone lives that long."
