Fried Chicken Dispatches
When you eat as much fried chicken as I do, you're going to experience some misses. Often times fried chicken is pretty good. Rarely is it excellent, at least in New York. But sometimes you eat fried chicken which is downright embarrassing. Such was the case with the fried chicken at Sugar Freak, a Louisiana-style parlour in Astoria. It's a warm and welcoming place, and the servers are nice. But this place purports to have roots from the creole state, and you would therefore expect excellent fried chicken. Indeed the finest fried chicken I have yet tasted on my journeys is from Baton Rouge. The fried chicken at Sugar Freak is simply shameful. The pieces of chicken were extremely meager and there was simply no flavor, nor excellent crunchy crust. When the server checked up on us, he said enthusiastically and with delusional sincerity "isn't the fried chicken killer?" Not having the heart to tell him it tasted like crap, I feebly replied "oh this chicken!" Thank you.
