As a general rule, you know you have a problem when the coolest part of a movie is the decision to use the old logo for the distributor before the film commences. Unfortunately, Indiana Jones is no exception to this rule.
There wasn't much about the movie that was absolutely awful or ridiculous (although there were a couple of things), but there just wasn't anything that good or fun, either.
If I had written the story for a new Indiana Jones movie, it would have gone something like this:
First scene - the fall of Berlin. You see someone running through the chaos of Russian bombings. It seems like it's Indiana Jones, as it usually is in these opening scenes. After a few minutes, the figure makes it inside a bunker and after traveling through a labyrinth of hallways enters an office, where Hitler himself gives the figure a map or something like that. Eventually, the figure is revealed to be not Indiana Jones, but some unknown man, who end up being the major villain.
Back at the university where Indy teaches - Indy is teaching, blah blah blah. Someone comes to see him. To make a long story short, it seems the Nazis had a secret project going on in South America, and many Nazis who escaped the war are there working on it. It might be possible to work in the idea of Space Nazis here.
Anyway, that's it for now. Also, the famous theme music wouldn't kick in until about halfway through the movie. At the beginning, the pace would be more leisurely, with not as many all-out thrills.
If you have any other ideas, please post a comment.

Someone Needs to End George Lucas
This was the best part of the new Indiana Jones movie
